Disaster Readiness for Safer Communities (D-RiSC), a statewide coalition of organizations representing California’s fire chiefs, firefighters and local governments committed to improving our disaster response capability, today issued the following statement in response to action last night by the Budget Conference Committee.

The statement may be attributed to Fire Chief Mark Hartwig, president of the California Fire Chiefs Association:

“Our coalition of fire chiefs, firefighters and local governments appreciates the Budget Conference Committee’s action last night to deepen California’s investment in our overstressed Mutual Aid system. While we believe more than $25 million is needed to pre-position resources, this is a meaningful investment to help make our Mutual Aid system more proactive in the face of California’s ‘new normal’ of increasing climate-driven disasters.

“What cannot be lost during ongoing budget discussions is that funding is still needed to modernize California’s Mutual Aid dispatch communications. To be effective, we must be able to process calls for mutual aid and deploy resources in the first moments of disaster. We plan to continue working with state legislators and Governor Brown to make this investment of $13 million, which can be accomplished through Cap-and-Trade funds.”
